Owing to its favorable geographical position, the Ston's Prevlaka (the Ston Isthmus) has always been an extraordinary place for connecting the cultural actions of people from a wide climatic area. A separate Neolithic civilization group consisting of the Adriatic Sea citizens did by no means quite accidentally inhabit this place in the ancient times, and the metal age archeology brought to light the evidence of import from the distant Aegean Sea and from the hinterland central inland parts. All these factors caused a fertile encounter of the Illyrian ancestors and Roman newcomers as carriers of the best classical ancient times heritage still present in this landscape. Hardly has any place at the Southern Adriatic coast provided so many Early Christian churches as this place being located among the early remains of the Roman and Byzantine settlements which had been built next to the first large salt pans being the key of the local economic takeoff for the benefit of the surrounding areas. Later, during the time, the fertile interweaving and merger of macro and micro energies in the manner indicated through the pieces of art relating to pre- Romanesque architecture and early Romanesque wall painting was confirmed. Even the late Middle Ages were characterized by extraordinary accomplishments in the world featured by fortification connecting the two small towns built according to a carefully created plan for the purpose of defending not only the Dubrovnik territorial property but also the plants well prepared for the salt production, meeting thus the needs of a wider regional area. Within such frames, the Ston salt pans have become the fundamental source of the prosperity of the Dubrovnik Republic which will for a long time pride itself with its freedom and will take a lead in the development of the Croatian culture.
Hardly has any of our areas been the venue of so many different verbal impacts of the human creative works as it has been Ston endowed with so many aesthetic values which still make it so attractive.
Being aware of these facts and for the purpose of reviving the heritage, all aimed at overall improvement of the daily way of living, the art colony of painters from all over the world and different generations have been acting for several years under the patronage of the Salt Pans' Management. The students studying at a new art academy from Široki Brijeg have especially been welcomed, who in this way could deeply penetrate into the naturally extremely exuberant fertile and culturally powerful coastal center which owing to its identities marked the character of this wide regional area. So, owing to the plant that for a long time has been facilitating the viability of this area, further gathering of the creative strengths is still enabled. They have agreed upon their intention to facilitate the reconstruction of the worn out pools in the salt pans by donating paintings, as the pools which were built some five centuries ago, have gradually lost their excellent technical performances. However, the reconstruction would in its original design and construction enable better maintenance conditions of the traditional production method and thereby even the preservation of those natural features owing to which the Ston salt has been internationally recognized as an environmentally pure product.
That is the reason why all the funds received from this sale painting exhibition are intended for the purchase of granite for paneling the pool as it used to be in the past guaranteeing thus the highest level of the healthy salt production. Showing a high respect for the past and supporting the young people's artistic creative work, join this useful action.
Buy a painting and build in your name in the monument that will be erected upon the finalization of the reconstruction of the salt pans in Ston, the oldest ones in Croatia and among the largest in the Mediterranean.
